MathMoms Evaluation Report (external) – October 2025

MathMoms commissioned an evalua:on of its mathema:cs educa:on component and

contracted Dr Andrew Hartnack and Helen Hacksley to evaluate the mathema:cs educa:on

aspect of its work. The key broad-level ques:ons for the evalua:on of the mathema:cs

educa:on component were given as:

• “Is what MathMoms does in the classroom what MathMoms says it does?” [i.e. is

there fidelity in the prac:ce of the MathMoms’ model as it is implemented in

schools?]; and

• “Is what MathMoms does in the classroom what is really needed for South African

children living in the context of implementa:on?” [i.e. are MathMoms’ outcomes

relevant and do they make a difference to children, to mothers, to schools, and in the

community]?

In addi:on to these ques:ons, the evalua:on examined the extent to which MathMoms is

mee:ng its three overarching aims: improving academic results; crea:ng economic

opportuni:es for unemployed adults; and crea:ng safe spaces with healthy, con:nuous

intergenera:onal rela:onships.
